A journal from our last European tour:

Today, first thing after breakfast, is practice and make some reeds. I´m the English horn player, and I have some very important solos in the main program. American in Paris has some very exposed solos- one sensuous singing lyrical lament and several jazzy rhythmic ones. For this Gershwin piece I need to make sure that I have a reed that speaks well in the low register. Also, the Dvorak New World Symphony has a very famous solo in the slow movement base on the spiritual " Going Home. " For that solo I need a reed that works well in the extreme upper register. My goal is to have at least two great reeds- one for each piece. Since every concert hall is different I will have to test each reed in each new hall to make sure that it sounds good and fix it if it doesn´t. So today I will spend several hours working on reeds. With a little luck I will succeed in making several good ones and therefore have some choices when the concerts begin.
