June 28th - July 1st

This week the BSO performs three different programs. On Wednesday we're backing up Ben Folds at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia. This is a repeat of our first Pops Rocks concerts last fall. We're not really used to someone playing the piano with the piano bench, but we had a great time anyway! Ben's a great musician, a real professional and very enjoyable to work with. The setlist includes "One Angry Dwarf", "Smoke", "Zak and Sara", "The Ascent of Stan", "Brick", " Narcolepsy", and lots more. Click here for tickets.

SuperPops: Hollywood: The Epics

Jack Everly, conductor

June 15th - 17th

Marin Alsop, conductor
Joshua Bell, violin

Kabalevsky: Colas Breugnon Overture
Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances, Op. 45
Corigliano: Violin Concerto, "The Red Violin"

This week Marin Alsop returns to conduct the BSO and Joshua Bell in John Corigliano's "Red Violin" Concerto. The BSO premiered this work with Marin Alsop and Joshua Bell three years ago. We will be recording these concerts to make a CD for Sony Classical.

This concerto was commissioned with the support of The Levi family of Baltimore. It is based on Corigliano's Oscar winning score for the movie "The Red Violin". If you haven't seen the movie, go rent it before these concerts. It's a fascinating film. Josh also performed on the soundtrack.

We have also recorded the Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances with David Zinman. It's available at the BSO Symphony Store. Also available at the store is a 1997 recording of Joshua Bell and the BSO performing the Barber and Walton Violin Concertos.

Click here to hear Brian Prectl's conversation with Marin this afternoon after our first rehearsal.

Click here to hear Ellen Pendleton Troyer and Joshua Bell discuss the Corigliano and the fascinating story behind his own violin.

Mahler: Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection"

Mahler’s second Symphony, entitled “Resurrection” is a masterpiece of emotional power and technical prowess from one of the greatest symphonists who ever lived. There is something about Mahler that reaches to the core of the human experience. It is epic and at the same time touches the very personal nature of humanity.

This piece was the first work in the Maestro’s tenure with us and it is fitting that it is his final offering as Music Director. In Mahler the expressive possibilities of the orchestra are fully realized. This is Maestro Temirkanov's greatest gift as an interpreter and we are looking forward to sharing this fantastic work with the Maestro and with our patrons.

It is no overstatement to say that these performances, and the powerful emotion on stage this week will be one of the most memorable cultural events in the history of Maryland. You won't be disappointed!

Click here to hear Ellen Pendleton Troyer speak with Maestro Yuri Temirkanov after rehearsal about Mahler, and the BSO. Marina Stokes provided Translation.
