There are two reasons why I'm especially looking forward to this week's concert.  One is that our last Shakespeare-themed program, which included actors from the Shakespeare Theatre was, to my mind, one of our most successful Twist concerts.  The other highlight for me is my first opportunity in 30+ years of orchestral bass playing to perform Nicolai's "Merry Wives of Windsor" overture.  This piece was on one of my parents' few classical records when I was growing up, and I listened to it over and over.  It's a tuneful, well crafted overture that for some reason seem to have fallen out of fashion.  This concert also features another seldom-heard work, Elgar's "Falstaff", along with Tchaikovsky's perennial favorite, "Romeo and Juliet", so there's a nice balance of the familiar and unfamiliar.  Maestro Kalmar enjoys a good rapport with the BSO, so it should be a fun week!
