There are two reasons why I'm especially looking forward to this week's concert. One is that our last Shakespeare-themed program, which included actors from the Shakespeare Theatre was, to my mind, one of our most successful Twist concerts. The other highlight for me is my first opportunity in 30+ years of orchestral bass playing to perform Nicolai's "Merry Wives of Windsor" overture. This piece was on one of my parents' few classical records when I was growing up, and I listened to it over and over. It's a tuneful, well crafted overture that for some reason seem to have fallen out of fashion. This concert also features another seldom-heard work, Elgar's "Falstaff", along with Tchaikovsky's perennial favorite, "Romeo and Juliet", so there's a nice balance of the familiar and unfamiliar. Maestro Kalmar enjoys a good rapport with the BSO, so it should be a fun week! Click here for the complete Program Notes from Overture Magazine. January 18th - 21stMaureen McGovern:

The Soulful Symphony |
These special concerts feature the entire Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, augmented by students from the Peabody Conservatory, in two works for large orchestra. These concerts are part of Peabody's Sesquicentennial Celebration. Ellen Pendleton Troyer performed the Rite of Spring with Leonard Bernstein in 1987. You can read her thoughts about this experience, and the connection with Music Director Designante Marin Alsop here. Included is a video of Maestra Alsop conducting for Bernstein.
